Direct mail can feel old-fashioned, but it works — especially for seniors and homeowners. A well-targeted postcard or letter sits on the kitchen table, gets read by a family member and produces calls for days. It is also a channel where compliance risk around calling is lower, because the consumer calls you.
Lists are everything
The mailing list decides most of your result. Options include:
- Compiled lists filtered by age, homeownership, income range and location.
- Turning-65 lists for Medicare, used within the rules for marketing to beneficiaries.
- New homeowner lists for home services, home insurance and security.
- Your own past callers who asked to receive information, if your privacy terms allow it.
Buy from reputable list brokers, ask how the data was compiled, and suppress addresses your buyer cannot serve.
Postcard or letter?
- Postcards are cheaper and read instantly. Best for simple offers like a home service or a quote.
- Letters feel personal and can explain more. Best for insurance, legal and financial offers. Plain envelopes get opened; obvious advertising often does not.
Design for the call
- The phone number in large type, near the top and again near the response line.
- Who answers, the hours and what the call involves.
- A clear reason to call by a real date.
- Your company name, required disclaimers and, for Medicare, the CMS-required statements for third-party marketing.
Never design mail to look like a government notice, a bill or an official benefits letter. Regulators and postal authorities take this seriously.
Tracking every drop
Use a different tracking number per list, version and drop date. Mail response arrives over several weeks; record the calls by number and you will know exactly which list and design paid off.
Economics
Response rates vary widely by list, offer and season. Do the maths before you mail: total cost (printing, postage, list) divided by expected billable calls must come in under your payout. Start with a test of a few thousand pieces, measure the cost per billable call, then scale the winning list and design.
