Marketing data is everywhere, but the question that matters is simple: which spend produced revenue? Good measurement answers it well enough to make decisions. You do not need a perfect system — you need a consistent one.
1. Tag every link with UTMs
UTM parameters (utm_source, utm_medium, utm_campaign, utm_content, utm_term) tell your analytics where each visitor came from. Agree a naming convention and use it everywhere: ads, emails, social posts, partner links. Inconsistent tags ("Facebook", "facebook", "fb") break reports.
2. Track the events that matter
In Google Analytics 4 (GA4) or a similar tool, define key events: form submissions, click-to-call taps, calls from tracking numbers, quote requests, purchases. Mark the important ones as key events (conversions). Avoid tracking dozens of minor events as conversions — it muddies the picture.
3. Bring offline outcomes back in
Lead generation rarely ends on the website. The real outcome — a billable call, a qualified lead, a sale — happens later, in a call center or CRM. Send those outcomes back to your analytics and ad platforms as offline conversions, matched by click ID, call ID or hashed contact details. This is the single biggest improvement most lead generators can make.
4. Understand attribution models
- Last click gives all credit to the final touch. Simple, but undervalues awareness channels.
- Data-driven spreads credit based on observed paths. Useful when you have enough data.
- First touch shows which channels introduce new people.
No model is "true". Use one consistently for budget decisions, and compare views occasionally to avoid starving channels that start journeys.
5. Respect privacy and consent
Cookie consent rules (especially in the UK and EU), browser tracking limits and platform changes mean you will not see everything. Use consent banners where required, server-side tracking and first-party data to recover signal within the rules. Expect some gap between platforms and your own numbers.
6. Build a weekly report that drives decisions
One page per week is enough: spend, leads, qualified leads, revenue and cost per qualified lead by channel and campaign, with a short note on what changed and what you will do next. Decisions, not dashboards, are the goal.
BFOUNT shows publishers their deliveries, billable outcomes and earnings in one portal, so offline results can be fed back into your ad platforms. Apply here.
